In an X post published on Sept. 3, Cyvers Alerts, a blockchain security platform, mentioned that the WazirX hacker had transferred $6.5 million worth of Ether (ETH) to Tornado Cash, a cryptocurrency tumbler. 

According to the data from Etherscan, the wallet address associated with the WazirX hacker conducted 26 transfers of 100 ETH within one hour. After the $6.5 million transfer, the hacker’s wallet is currently valued at more than $153,720. 

On July 18, Cyvers Alerts was the first platform to inform WazirX that it had detected “multiple suspicious transactions” on the exchange’s Safe multisig wallet on Ethereum. The WazirX hacker was able to to withdraw $234.9 million from the multisig exploit.

The report highlighted that the address has converted Pepe (PEPE), Gala (GALA), and Tether (USDT) into ETH. 

Although the Indian crypto exchange witnessed a devastating loss, WazirX, on Aug.8, announced that they will be restoring the balances of all accounts and undo all the trades carried out following the stoppage of withdrawals on July 18, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Indian Standard Time (IST).

On the same day as the hacker transferred $6.5 million, WazirX announced that it had started the “INR Withdrawals Phase 2.” The Indian crypto exchange stated that all eligible users can now withdraw up to the full 66% limit of their Indian rupee balances.

Although the recovery process began, Indian investors have expressed their anger against the crypto exchange and its co-founder, Nischal Shetty. Several investors asked to return 100% of their funds and asked Shetty to start the crypto asset trading and withdrawals. 

Immunefi’s July 2024 report also highlighted that out of the 14 crypto attack incidents WazirX hack had the most losses.
