September sees $332M lost in exploits, hacks, and scams: CertiK

The price of Bitcoin (BTC) may have remained considerably flat in September, but crypto exploiters may have gone over time with their illicit activities.

Blockchain security firm CertiK found that September was so far the month mostly plagued by crypto-related exploits, with a staggering $332 million in losses.

In a Sept. 30 post on X (formerly Twitter), CertiK said crypto exploits resulted in more than $329 million in losses. Meanwhile, exit scams, and flash loan attacks involved around $1.9 million and $400,000, respectively.

The data shows that a significant amount of the month’s totals came from the Mixin Network attack reported on Sept. 25, where hackers ran off with approximately $200 million after exploiting the Hong Kong-based decentralized cross-chain transfer protocol’s cloud service provider.

Other major incidents in the month included double-digit losses in the CoinEX and Stake.com attacks, resulting in $53.1 million and $41 million in losses, respectively.

Meanwhile, phishing attacks amounted to $24 million in losses, followed by the $7.9 million in the HTX Global hack.

North Korean cybercrime collective Lazarus Group was behind the hack of crypto gambling website Stake, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). They were also reportedly the entity responsible for carrying out the attack on the crypto exchange CoinEx.

The latest data from Dune Analytics show that the group currently holds $45.6 million in crypto assets.

September’s numbers have also taken the yearly total of crypto lost to exploits to $925.4 million, with July being the second-highest month for exploit losses that resulted in $285.8 million in siphoned value.

Overall, the total amount lost to exploits, scams, and hacks in 2023 is currently at $1.34 billion.
