Google is turning to nuclear power to meet the growing electricity demands for its AI data centers.
They've partnered with Kairos Power to bring small modular reactors online by 2030 and aim for additional deployments by 2035.
Google has committed to buying 500 megawatts of power from these reactors, making it a pioneering move in the tech world.
This trend isn't just Google's game: Amazon and Microsoft are also tapping into nuclear power for their data centers.
U.S. data center power usage is expected to triple by 2030, so they're planning ahead.
However, Kairos will need to secure permits from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which could take some time. The stakes and complexities are high, but the path ahead is an exciting one for tech and energy.
Google said it has agreed to buy power from six to seven reactors, which is smaller than the output of today's nuclear reactors.
"We feel like nuclear can play an important role in helping to meet our demand ... cleanly in a way that's more around the clock," Michael Terrell, senior director for energy and climate at Google, said in a media call.
