ZKNation, the organization that governs the Ethereum layer-2 ZKsync, will be airdropping 3.675 billion ZK tokens to early users of the protocol, it announced on June 11.
The amount dedicated to airdrops for early adopters represents 17.5% of the ZK token’s total supply of 21 billion, the organization said in a blog post. The initiative will be a one-time airdrop, and eligible community members will be able to claim their tokens starting next week until Jan. 3, 2025.
The protocol’s GitHub developers and helpers will have until June 25 to associate their address to their account to claim their tokens, while contributors will be able to claim starting June 24.

The remaining ZK tokens (49.1%) will be allocated over time through various ecosystem initiatives overseen by both the ZKsync Foundation and the ZK Nation’s governance process, with 17.2% allocated to investors and 16.1% to the Matter Labs team. The organization said this approach will attempt to fuel the ecosystem’s expansion as new users join the network.
In total, some 695,232 wallets will receive the airdrop, described as the “largest distribution of tokens to users amongst major rollups.” ZKNation said that the airdropped tokens will be fully liquid upon release, having no vesting or lock-up periods.
“Awarding more tokens in the airdrop than to the Matter Labs team and investors is more than a symbolic decision for the community,” ZKNation wrote. “When the ZKsync governance system launches in the coming weeks, the community will have the largest supply of liquid tokens to direct protocol governance upgrades.”
To determine eligibility and token allocation for the airdrop, a snapshot of user activity on both ZKsync Era and ZKsync Lite was taken on March 24, coinciding with the first anniversary of ZKsync Era’s mainnet launch.
The airdrop is split into two segments of the community: users (89%) and contributors (11%). Users are those who transacted on ZKsync and met a threshold of activity. On the other hand, contributors comprise individuals, developers, researchers, communities, and companies who contributed to the ZKsync ecosystem and protocol through development, advocacy, or education.
